Mount Olive College, located at Daklane, Kohima has weathered 14 years since its establishment in the year 1992.
Mount Olive College, sponsored by the Sumi Baptist Church, Kohima is a modest venture in the field of higher education in Nagaland, contributing towards many a student’s academic aspirations.

And the matter doesn’t stop there. The Sumi Baptist Church of late, has various projects both academic and professional, in the interest of a fast-changing society. Higher education is one of these projects. The members of the Church had a dream to help out the needy and students desirous of formal college education. They nurtured a vision to establish an institution of higher education where students would be groomed mentally, physically and spiritually to be an asset to society. With this vision, the Mount Olive College was established in the year 1992 with all commitment and dedication.

Presently, the college has nearly 700 students on its roll.

The college was inaugurated by former Chief Minister of Nagaland KL Chishi on July 26, 1992. H Hesso became the first chairman of the Governing Body and Dr KK Zhimomi (former Registrar, Nagaland University, Campus, Kohima) accepted to be the Honorary Principal of the College.

On July 30, 1992, the college started its first academic session of Pre-University (Arts), under NEHU, Shillong.

In 1994, Degree Course in the stream of arts was introduced even while Nagaland University also came into existence the same year itself. Expectedly, Mount Olive College came under Nagaland University having its temporary affiliation in general and honors courses in the subjects.

The General course is English, Political Science, History, Education and Economics combination while the Honors course combo is English, Political Science, History and Education.

Under the new scheme of education, Pre-University (XI & XII) classes were de-linked from the university in 2000 and came under the control of Nagaland Board of School Education, Kohima (NBSE). As such, Mount Olive College, like all other colleges in Nagaland is governed by the Nagaland Board of School Education for higher secondary (XI & XII) classes and Nagaland University for degree course.

The subjects offered at Higher Secondary level (Compulsory) are English and Alternative English/Sumi (MIL) while Elective/Additional subjects are Political Science, History, Education, Economics, Sociology, Informatics practices (Computer) and music.

“Mount Olive College has well-qualified, experienced and dedicated faculty members. Naturally, the result has always been excellent-sometimes having a place among top tens. Besides, equal attention is paid to co-curricular activities also. And the students equally excel and bag trophies/medals as winner of the events,” said the college principal Narendra Tiwary.

The college is a permanent affiliated unit of Nagaland University and it has been included under section 2 (f) by University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi.

The college has the provision of a regular assembly and Evangelical Union (EU) Services for moral and spiritual elevation of the students. For social elevation, there is a provision of Youth Red Cross and National Service Scheme (NSS) Units at the college and participation of the students is quite satisfactory, Tiwary said in a brief report during the inauguration of Solomon House last week.

Mount Olive College is managed and governed by a  well-composed Governing body. All the members are well-known for their effort  and contributions either as educationists or as administrators in various levels.

“Their sincere efforts are always suitable for creating an ideal atmosphere of quality in higher education. There is a proposal to have a judicious combination of traditional and electronic media of imparting education as print media and traditional education are in crisis today,” the principal added.

The Mount Olive College has already introduced computer course at Higher Secondary level and there is a proposal to develop it up to degree level as well.

Besides, there is a proposal to introduce some job-oriented and regular courses also so that the students may be able to build up their career and get placements after completion of their college studies.

In the meantime, the principal has drawn the attention of the government that there is one Nullah (back drainage) at the rear of the Solomon building of the college. The drain originates  from the main town and move towards the valley of the old boarder road in Kohima and past the campus.

“If it is not properly maintained, it will completely damage building of the college,” said Tiwary and requested the government to take up the issue in the interest of the public in general and the college in particular.
