Dimapur, December 4 (MExN): Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir on Thursday highlighted the excessive delay in establishing the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) for Nagaland, an initiative announced by the then Union Finance Minister, late Arun Jaitley, during the Union Budget for 2015-16.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Jamir informed the House that, following the announcement, a strategic plot of approximately 200 acres of land was successfully acquired near Dimapur Airport, taking advantage of its proximity to both air and rail connectivity (the Dhansiri-Southeast Railway line).
However, Jamir stated that despite the land acquisition being completed years ago, no subsequent action has been taken to commence the project. ‘The plans have remained inactive, delaying a transformative educational and research opportunity for the youth of Nagaland and the entire North-East,’ he stated.
Significantly, the MP appealed to the Government of India to urgently re-consider and prioritise the establishment of this vital institution. The appeal was contextualized within the framework of the special constitutional provisions (Article 371A) meant for Nagaland, emphasising the state’s unique position and the imperative for balanced national development.
Furthermore, the MP underlined that the establishment of the IISER is not merely an isolated project but is essentially linked to the "all-around development" of Nagaland and the broader North-Eastern region. ‘The institute is envisioned as a cornerstone for fostering advanced scientific temper, generating high-quality human resources, and driving sustainable and inclusive growth in this strategically important part of the country,’ Jamir stated.
