RAJYA SABHA MP T.R Zeliang today called upon the people of Peren district to settle the dispute over the district site selection at the earliest. Stating that the new district was losing heavily in terms of developmental benefits because of the tussle over the district site, the MP cautioned the people that although many developmental funds are on the way, it would disappear again if the tussle continued.
Two years have elapsed since the up-gradation of Peren sub-division into district. However, the choice of district headquarter varies amongst the people of this infant and backwater district, and it is still continuing, stalling all developmental works.
The new district was allocated with Rs 2 crore last year for development.
However, it rebounded as it failed to find space for development because of the conflict amongst the people over the selection of district site.
The MP also said that even this year, the government has earmarked about Rs 20 crores for the development of three new districts, which included Kiphire, Longleng and Peren.
“But this money will not come to the Peren unless this conflict is there”, TR Zeliang said.
However, Zeliang said that the headquarter should be located according to the choice of the majority, and should go beyond political party line.
Meanwhile, TR Zeliang said that the delimitation act may come to Nagaland state, as it has affected other sister states like Meghalaya, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh.
However, he said that since the Act comes under the parliament it is up to the centre whether to implement it or not, and the state has less say on the matter.
Further, the Rajya Sabha MP also disclosed that the Peren-Maram road would be converted shortly into a double lane. This has been approved by the union cabinet. The project will be implemented under the State Accelerated Road Development Plan (USARDP).
Besides, inter-connectivity road is in the offing for Athibung-Khelma under Peren district and Pfutsero-Zhamai under Phek district.
The Government has sanctioned Rs. 38.71 crore for the new road which is to be connected from 7th mile NH 39 via Khupanala and Mhainamtsi to Peren under the Non Lapsable Central Pool of resource (NLCPR), disclosed Zeliang.
