Dimapur, January 3: On December 17, 2013 the yearly Christmas celebration in Mon District Hospital took place in a slightly different style. As a sign of appreciation for the hard work performed by all the medical staff, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) helped arrange the ‘Best Nurse of Mon District Hospital of the year 2013’ award.

MSF in a press release stated that in order to select a winner, the General Nurse Midwives (GNMs) underwent to two and a half months of practical evaluation, from the beginning of October to mid December 2013. The best performing nurses of each ward were then subjected to a multiple-choice test. Sr Toshilila, NRHM (National Rural Health Mission) staff nurse, currently working in the chest ward (a special unit for Tuberculosis patients), was given the award because of her hard work, dedication to her patients, and practical skills. Sr Toshilila said, “It was a great honor to me, and it was very unexpected that I won this contest. I just carry out my duties as requested.”

A competition was also held for the ‘Best Christmas Decoration’. Most of the wards put great effort into decorating their departments in the most creative way. It was a difficult decision for the jury to choose a winner, but finally the gynecology ward won the contest and received a cake as a prize. KNSK president, Lomei, donated a token of love to all the participants, which was very much appreciated by all the staff.

Sr Hangkoi – acting Assistant Nurse Superintendant said, “This was a special occasion, different from the other years, with all the attention and gifts we received from both KNSK and MSF. We thank them for all the efforts made.”

“MSF could not have done this without the help of all the other staff,” said Rita Vandemaele, MSF nurse. “It was the collaboration amongst all that led to this great success. We hope that such initiatives will be repeated also after the planned handover of the project to the Ministry of Health in June 2014. We also hope that the Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) can join in this contest next time. It was the first time that such a contest took place, so it was tried only on a small scale”.
