Mizo Students’ Union (MSU), during its 18th General Conference, has resolved to ensure that Mizoram has its own battalion, "purely Mizos," to guard the borders of the State.
The 18th general conference of Mizo Students’ Union (MSU) held in Bairabi town on the Mizoram-Assam border, began on October 8 and culminated on October 10.
MSU general secretary, Samuel Zoramthanpuia said that the student body in its business session held on Wednesday had unanimously resolved to take measures to ensure that the state has its own battalion, purely Mizos, to guard the border and also install better border check posts in border areas. The student body also resolved to take steps so that separate budget is allocated for Mizo Youth Commission (MYC), according to Samuel. It also agreed to take measures to ensure that substitute or proxy teachers are punished and more exam centres are opened for various competitive exams related with Central service, banks and corporation, Samuel Zoramthanpuia added.
Meanwhile, Mizoram Education minister, Lalchhandama Ralte, addressing the gathering on Wednesday night expressed concern about the declining number of educated Mizo youths in clearing the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination and other central services. Ralte also said that efforts should be made to have as many Mizo youths under the central service as possible.
He then expressed apprehension that the Mizo people will be dominated by outsiders unless more and more Mizo youths do not clear UPSC exams and be employed under central services.
“The Mizo youths should be awakened about the importance and value of education and they should take the challenge that they are capable of doing what other people can do,” he said.
The minister then encouraged the gathering students to work hard and make massive efforts in the field of education.
He pointed out that the state government is mulling to create Mizoram Education Service to reform education system in the state. Ralte also said that mass inspection of schools will be conducted across the state to assess the status of the students. He also pitched the necessity of including subjects on culture and traditions of the Mizos in curriculum.
