‘My Waste My Responsibility’

Over a thousand students pledges for clean and smart Kohima

In a welcome move, 1,662 students and teachers from 34 private schools today demonstrated their concern for clean and smart Kohima by joining awareness rally on ‘My Waste My Responsibility’ here.


The students undertook rally from their respective schools and converged at Little Flower Higher Secondary School for a brief programme and pledged to volunteer for clean Kohima.


The event was powered by All Nagaland Private Schools' Association, ANPSA- Kohima Unit in collaboration with Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL) under 100 days “Smart City Special Initiative Campaign on Sanitation.”


"Illiterate and uneducated people are picking up waste after the educated people who litters," said Kohima additional deputy commissioner Lithrongla Thongpi Rutsa while addressing the gathering. 


Stating that cleanliness begins at home, Lithrongla urged the students to adopt good sanitary practice and make cleanliness as part of their daily activities.


KSCDL chief executive officer Kovi Meyase Meyase said that Smart City is not just about building infrastructure nor is it a one-time beautification of Kohima city.


While maintaining that there are no magic formula to become smart, he said we can truly become smart if we realize our roles and responsibilities. 


For this to happen, we need to change our behaviors and our attitudes, he added.


"It is our responsibility as educators to sensitize students, parents and the general public on the issues concerning our environment," said ANPSA- Kohima unit president P. J Nathan.


Nathan also said that despite the tremendous efforts of KMC and the active participation of all the colonies, there are still wastes dumped in the open.


He made a sincere request to KMC is to explore the possibilities for increasing the frequency of garbage collection not only in colonies but various crucial points.  Later, Ella Mary of Green Team Kohima demonstrated the importance of waste segregation.
