The Naga ancestral village- Khezhakeno about 55 kms from Kohima and 94 kms away from Phek district headquarters today accomplished its long felt desire as Nagaland’s Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio dedicated a full-fledged rural police station.

An added jubilation to the villagers was the assurance from the Chief Minister to take up the irrigation project in the village to enhance the farming activities and the agri-link road connecting Mao as assured by Agriculture minister Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu.

Rio in his speech asked the villagers to cooperate with the police forces in delivering security, safety and maintaining law and order situation in the area. He lauded the contribution of many villagers where anti-social elements were apprehended and  hand over to the police. Rio said that he wanted to see constant co-operation between the two to bring about congenial peaceful atmosphere.

In 1982, a police outpost was established in this village. Later, in August 1991, it was decided to add another police unit in the form of check post, because of the growing need arising out of the increasing use of the NEC inter state link road which connects Tadubi of Manipur on NH 39 with Phek and Pfutsero and beyond via Khezhakeno.

“This check post was more specifically intended to address the problem relating to highway crimes, more accidents relief and prevention of transporting of contraband and illegal substances and the like,” said Nagaland’s Director General of Police, J  Changkija, IPS.

He said the upgradation of Khezhakeno police outpost to that of a full-fledged rural police station was in recognition of the growing importance of Khezhakeno not only from the historical and Naga heritage point of view but also from the modern day policing requirement arising out of the strategic locational importance of the place.

There are other important factors also such as proximity to inter state boundary, of being a thorough-fare for Manipur-Nagaland inter state road traffic which is picking up, and such other problems that are inherent in being in the inter state border area.

Stating that the upgradation also represents a new initiative by the government in consolidating and augmenting of rural policing in the state, the DGP said that the joint efforts of the two local police unit will address all aspects of rural policing and fulfill the need for safety and security of community life in the area and also security on the highway for travelers and wayfarers.

He also hoped that the rural police station will help to usher in a congenial security climate which will in turn usher in peace and prosperity to the people of the area in particular and to the state of Nagaland in general.

Saying that the granting of police station was a landmark in the history of village development, Timikha Koza, advocate said that “This Police outpost will now strengthen the hand of the district administration, as it will be able to affectively control any law and order problem.

Minister for home Thenucho, minister for agriculture Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, VCC chairman Vivotso also addressed the function.
Phek deputy commissioner Sachopra Vero chaired the function while vote of thanks was tendered by Kevekha Kevin Zehol, NCS, SDO © Kiphire.
