Dimapur, April 14 (MExN): The Naga Army and Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) have expressed shock and sadness over the demise of the GOC Eastern Command, Major General Hangchiu of Kimphu village, eastern Khiamniungam (Burma) around 3:25 pm on April 13.
“Major General Hangchiu was a true patriot who joined the Naga National service in the Naga Army in 1980 and sincerely served the Nation till his last breathe,” stated a condolence message. “In his distinguished career of serving the nation spanning more than 37 years he gave his all for the Naga National Cause.”
It informed that the deceased held responsibilities in various capacities as Company Commander, 22nd Battalion Commander and by virtue of his “seniority, dedication and sincerity” was given the responsibility of GOC, Eastern Command in 2009. He was promoted to Major General on August 14, 2011, it added.
The message described Hangchiu as a dedicated officer who earned the admiration of his friends, colleagues and all his subordinate associates.
“He was humble and down to earth but resolute and totally committed in the pursuit of the attainment of the long cherished Naga goal. Leaders like him contributed greatly to the cementing of ties of the East Nagas with the other Nagas. In his death the Nagas have lost a true patriot which is irreplaceable but his deeds will be remembered and cherished,” it added.
The rank and file of the Naga Army and FGN have offered condolences to his children and all his near and dear ones.
