The Peoples’ Committee for Peace Initiative of Assam (PCPIA) is organizing a day long interactive programme at the Assam-Nagaland border of Merapani in Golaghat district of Assam on October 27 bring in understanding among the people living in both sides of the border. The PCPIA is organizing the programme as part of its continued efforts to strengthen the brotherhood among the Assamese and the Nagas and also to press the concerned government to solve the boundary dispute between the two states in amicable manner. In a meeting organized by the PCPIA on Friday in Guwahati, chief convener of the organization Lachit Bordoloi said that the interaction programme with the Naga local organizations like the Naga Hoho, Naga Mothers’ Association and others are essential to strengthen the relation among the people of the two neighbouring states.
“All the sensitive issues between the Assam and Nagaland including the vexed border problem should be solved immediately and the organizations like the Naga Hoho, Naga Mothers’ Association, and other local human rights bodies could play a vital role in this regard,” he said. Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) secretary general N Venu while speaking on the occasion said that the people of both the states wants peace to prevail along the border. “However, some anti-social elements had always been trying to create tension along the border for their interests,” he said and added that democratic organizations of both the states could play a vital role in this regard. “Tomorrow’s programme at Merapani would be attended by people from both sides of the border and we hope the deliberations by the intellectuals and NGOs from Assam and Nagaland would help bringing in a sense of peace along the borders,” said Venu.
