Hoho upholds 3rd Assembly resolutions for amendment of Nagaland Municipal Act

Dimapur, January 3 (MExN): The Naga Hoho has reaffirmed the 3rd Assembly Resolutions for amendment of the Nagaland Municipal Act. “Therefore, in the event of any adverse effect in future with regards to infringements of Article 371 (A) of the Constitution of India through introduction of 33% women reservation (in the Urban Local Bodies elections), the Naga Hoho shall not be held responsible or shall not be a party to it,” the Hoho stated today in a statement.

The Executive Council of the Naga Hoho issued the statement to “clarify its position and to clear the minds of the general public” in regards to municipal elections vis-à-vis the 33% women reservation and Article 371(A). The Executive Council had an emergency meeting on January 2, 2017 at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur.

The statement from C. Daipao, Secretary, Information & Publicity, Naga Hoho stated that following the unilateral decision taken by the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) on December 29, 2016, superseding the joint ultimatum submitted to the Government of Nagaland on December 10, 2016 demanding not to conduct municipal elections, “the Naga Hoho is compelled to take its own position in the larger interest of the people.”

Observing that all the tribe hohos have taken their own decisions/ positions in regards to holding of municipal elections, the Executive Council resolved to leave the matter to the concerned tribe hohos and the people in their respective jurisdiction to decide what is best for the people, according to the statement.
