Naga MLA resigns over tardy talks

DIMAPUR, DEC 23 (MExN): Setting the pace ahead of not only the Manipur State elections early next year but also the crucial Naga talks in Delhi, sitting MLA from Tamenglong constituency, Samuel Jendai today resigned from the Manipur State Legislative Assembly with a clear message for the Government of India to expedite the Indo-Naga peace process. “I am not against the Government of India but they should be sincere and expedite the peace process”, Jendai told The Morung Express over phone. Jendai expressed dismay over the recent comment made by Oscar Fernandes in Imphal that the “peace talk was going too slow”.

Earlier on December 19, Jendai had avowed that he would “abide by the direction and declaration of the United Naga Council” and that he would remain fully committed to the stand in respect of unification of Naga areas into a single political unit and that he fully supports the Indo-Naga peace talks.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that NSCN (IM) General Secretary Th Muivah will pay a visit to Nagaland after Christmas but no date has been fixed yet. NSCN (IM) sources informed that the talks in Delhi would begin only after New Year and after the Collective Leadership visit Nagaland to apprise the people of the progress in the talks so far.

It was informed that ‘courtesy visits’ with Indian political leaders and Government of India officials would take place around the time of Christmas depending on the schedule being worked out.
