With the objective of promoting road safety, the Nagaland Motorcycle Club (NMC) has taken an initiative to install road safety signs at a segment of NH 29 in Chümoukedima. Reflective Road Safety Signboards, also visible at night time, was installed at the foot overbridge located at the Chümoukedima second gate on July 2.

The said segment of the highway has been prone to fatal accidents. The initiative was to encourage the motorists, particularly the two-wheelers, to obey traffic rules and follow personal safety measures, aimed at reducing accidents and ensure a safer riding experience.

According to the NMC President, Peter Rutsa, the signs will be visible at night from a distance of 100 meters and  expressed hope that it will help to remind commuters to obey traffic rules. The signs were made at a cost of around Rs 43,000 pooled through freewill donations.

Rutsa said that the club, founded in 2010, has evolved from a group of people with a shared passion for Royal Enfield motorcycles to promoting tourism, engaging in philanthropy, social activities, and community awareness programs in collaboration with the state government.

ACP Niuland, Nokin Longkumer, acknowledged the club's voluntary initiative and encouraged the club to continue such efforts, while assuring them of departmental support. He hoped the NMC initiative become an inspiration for others.

EAC Chümoukedima, Kevithito Rose said that the Purana Bazaar to Chümoukedima 4-lane highway happens to be the best road in the state. However, he reminded that it has also claimed many lives. He applauded the Club for going beyond educating two-wheeler riders and motorists about road safety. According to him, the NMC is changing the public perception of bikers as people.

He took the opportunity to urge the public to follow traffic rules, and avoid reckless riding. He emphasized that drivers are not only responsible for their own lives but also for the lives of others on the road. He encouraged motorists to be mindful of their actions and consider the potential consequences of their behaviour.
