Naga scholars hold ‘consultative meetings’

Dimapur, June 17 (MExN): In the tradition of consultations, the Naga Scholars’ Association (NSA) recently initiated a two-day ‘Naga Consultative Meeting on Political Settlement’ in Dimapur.

The three main objectives of the ‘consultative meetings’ were to address how to strengthen civil society organizations, dialogue with neighbouring communities/peoples, and to assess and address issues and concerns regarding the Naga political negotiation “entering the final stage.”

The NSA is a Delhi-based association of Naga scholars. Their consultative meeting, held on June 15-16, was participated by “Naga intellectuals, leaders and civil society groups including delegations from the Naga Hoho, FNR, NPMHR, NBCC, ANPSA and CCJP,” informed a press release from NSA President, Dr. Zuchamo Yanthan and its General Secretary, Dr. Lungthuiyang Riamei.

“After a meticulous assessment of the given themes, many challenges were also identified for addressing them,” stated the press release without notifying details.

According to the NSA, the meeting was “engaging and educative.”

“The initiative would be crucial for addressing the challenges related to the process of Naga political negotiated settlement. It was unanimously decided that the initiative should continue to achieve the desired objective,” the Association maintained.

This initiative comes in the wake of, as per the NSA, a “great opportunity for realizing our aspiration with the current negotiations between the Naga national leaders and the Government of India which is said to have entered the final stage.”

In a concept note on the consultative meetings, the Association maintained that “The outcome of the consultative meeting will largely depend on the response, contribution and commitment of the participants. This exercise is expected to provide a clearer picture to map the potential challenges in the wake of the political negotiated agreement and address the challenges thereof.”
