Winner of Kanoria Centre for Arts Scholarship and Lalit Kala Research Scholarship, H. Akup Buchem, a sculptor artist from Nagaland in making a mark in the field of this art. Recently, Buchem’s art exhibition was held at Indian art fair in Delhi from February 2 to 5.
Talking about his work, Buchem narrates, “Born and brought up in a suburban atmosphere surrounded by nature, I have witnessed the changes that took place within my surroundings. As time move on with each second and every second the world - society and the environment changes.”

This young artist from Nagaland says, “Being a member of the Naga tribal community growth, abandonment, ruins, survival affect the way my work has progressed.” Buchem holds criterion of MFA, Sculpture, Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata and BFA, Sculpture, Indra Kala Sangit University, Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh.
Stating about his believes that every medium has its own venerability, Buchem said, “I long to explore and bring out the beauty within it and look into the areas of compatibilities between forms, objects and materials. My preference is to use naturally found objects and juxtapose forms with such objects to create poetic visuals.”

Giving more insight about his work, Buchem says that he also use terracotta, wood, branches, twigs, paper and nonconventional materials are his most favourite. “My objective is to use such diversely sound and fragile materials and translates them into more cohesive forms to create my artwork,” he added.
He discloses that his recent work that he has been experimenting with for the past five years explores the theme of changing environments and says, “Using found objects both industrial and natural I try to construct environments that tacitly respond to the process and forces shaping growth and life of contemporary cities.” Since the year 2005, Buchem has participated in more than 13 group shows with the latest one being held at Lalit Kala Annual Show, Regional Centre, Kolkata in 2017. His solo show was hosted in Nagaland State Academy, Kohima on 2010.

Besides attending and conducting workshops and camps in places close to his homeland, Buchem has travelled to New Delhi, Orissa, Kolkata and few more.
