General Secretary of Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho today said Naga society is pinning high hopes on the youth, especially students, to bring about much-needed change in society.
“We are talking about change day in and day out but change cannot come about by talking alone. We have to be part of the change,” the NBCC General Secretary said.
Addressing the 23rd Fresher’s Day of Tetso College celebrated on the theme ‘Salvete 2017’ (Salvete means ‘welcome’ in Latin), Rev. Keyho maintained Naga society is presently going through a “turbulent time” and “bad weather” and in such a time, it is of no use to play blame games or point fingers at one another but that every individual must strive harder to rebuild society and ensure a better future for coming generations.
He also said every student must ask one important question – the purpose of education. According to Rev. Keyho, the purpose of education is to gain knowledge, mould character and shape one’s mind and personality. The priority should be on development of personality and not acquiring of degrees, he added.
Further, he stated in the present world of IT and advanced scientific inventions where one can gather all information and knowledge simply by sitting at home, a student must question the purpose of education and also seek the answer individually as the teacher can only guide them.
He also asked the students what value there is if they “discover things beyond” but cannot discover themselves, cannot give a logical and philosophical conclusion about themselves.
Students, he said, are like “rough diamonds”, which need filling and polishing before they can develop all their faculties and potentials.
Earlier, director (administration), Tetso College, Kvulo Lorin delivered welcome address and vice principal of the college, Dr. Hewasa Lorin officiated presentation of awards to meritorious students.
Clean Election Campaign
NBCC General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho said the Clean Election Campaign initiated by NBCC is a “war/fight” to secure a better future and hope for the upcoming generations.
“My generation has messed up things for you,” Keyho admitted to the students and said the campaign is an endeavour to clean up the mess. He said the campaign may not be an overnight success and that it might take another two generations for the desired change to take place.
“But it is about your future and you should tell your Church and community to give you a future,” he told the students. For success of the campaign, Rev. Keyho said the underlying principle should be “I’ll clean myself first.”
He further admitted that the NBCC of late has become the “punching bag” of the society for alleged failures to address moral and social issues. He however said that though the association is being “knocked down” or knocked about, yet it has not been “knocked out” and would try its best to fulfill the expectations of the society.
