‘Naga society wants peace’

Governor says permanent peace has to be found

Mokokchung, April 29 (MExN): Nagaland Governor Dr. Ashwani Kumar has asserted that Naga society needs peace. After taking office in mid-March, Dr. Ashwani informed that he has met a cross section of the Naga people – the rich and the poor, the intellectuals, the leaders of the society – and all of them expressed one thing: Need for peace in the land. This was stated during his address at a civic reception at Town Hall, Mokokchung on his first official visit to Mokokchung after taking charge as Governor.

The Nagaland Governor pointed out that though there is a “cease fire between” the Naga political groups and the government of India, the civil society leaders pointed out that “it is just a temporary cessation of violence.” And therefore, he added that permanent peace has to be found to the Naga political problem.

In this regard, he expressed hope that the people of Mokokchung who have contributed much to the history of Nagaland, would help in furthering peace in the land.

Dr. Ashwani maintained that development and prosperity would be ushered in only when there is an atmosphere of peace in the land. He therefore espoused faith in the people of Mokokchung to work for peace.

Expounding his concern for the youth, Dr. Ashwani challenged the educated youths to be prepared to face  competition from other educated people in the national as well as the international level. In this connection, he maintained that rapid employment and economic growth is required to address the needs of the youth in the state.

While talking about Mokokchung district, Dr. Ashwani was all praise for people from here. He said that Mokokchung has always been close to his heart as he had visited the place way back in 1986.

He recollected his stay twenty seven years back and narrated of the guest house he stayed in and also of the villages he visited. He further expressed hope that he would discover them during the next two days of his stay.

On a nostalgic note, Dr Ashwani narrated that when he first visited in 1986, the people of Mokokchung treated him as a ‘younger brother’ and now they were welcoming him as the Governor of Nagaland. He requested the people to treat him like a brother again but this time perhaps like an elder brother.

The Governor was accompanied by high ranking officials from the Raj Bhavan. The Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung delivered the introductory speech while the President of the Ao Senden delivered the welcome speech. Senior Citizen, M Bendangnukshi Longkumer delivered a short speech while the DBs of Mokokchung presented a folk song.
