Tuensang, October 16 (MExN): Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tuensang in collaboration with Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS), Tuensang celebrated Mahila Kisan Divas on October 15.
Tshelhiu, EAC Tuensang graced the occasion as special guest. Speaking on the occasion, Tshelhiu explained on the role of women in agriculture and how there has been a transformation in agriculture in the recent years due to introduction of new and improved technologies and how women have been playing a pivotal role in agriculture being the backbone of the country, since time immemorial. She deliberated that the role of women in agriculture has been invisible in the past because it was just a daily routine compared to men, but now things have changed as Naga women are chiefly responsible for keeping the state’s agrarian economy going, so today, they have gone a step further and transformed themselves into successful entrepreneurs by forming Self Help Groups (SHGs).
Rev. Achu, Executive Secretary, CBLT, Tuensang encouraged the women farmers to work harder and avail the various government schemes implemented by Central, State, NGOs and private agencies for the welfare of women and encourage them to take up training and capacity building programs for maneuvering all their activities. An award presentation was also conducted to give recognition to the hardworking women farmers of Tuensang District and three awardees namely Arila Sangtam, S. Asonla Chang and T. Asang bagged the prizes.
The awardees also shared their experiences to the rest of the members present in the programme. The programme was also followed by two seminars on the topics “Women’s Right and Right to Information” and “Women in Agriculture” and the speakers were Yimtsusangla Chang, Project Assistant, District Legal Service Authority, Tuensang and Dr. Shisarenla Aier, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture), KVK, Tuensang, where the main objective of the seminar was to create an awareness among the women on the different rights of women, how to file an RTI and how taking up of improved technologies in agriculture & allied activities can help in increasing the income of the women farmers.
Shisarenla Aier, Subject Matter Specialist, Division of Horticulture, KVK, Tuensang in a press release stated that altogether 38 women farmers representing different villages in Tuensang along with 10 officials from KVK, NEIDA and ECS were present in the programme.
