Naga youth murdered in Goa

Dimapur, June 15 (MExN): A 26 year old Naga youth was murdered in a brutal stabbing June 13 night in Goa by a man said to be a former colleague of the deceased. Toshi Jamir, 26, said to be from Diphupar village in Dimapur, was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Goa’s capital Panaji after he was stabbed to death by a man police said is a former co-worker.

With Governor of Maharashtra Dr. SC Jamir actively pushing the case, it was informed that Panaji police have launched a manhunt for a Nepali youth identified as one Vikram Thapa alias Saba, aged 20 years, suspected of murdering Toshi Jamir.

It was informed that the victim was stabbed by the accused at around midnight at the deceased’s residence near the city’s 18th June Road. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead-on-arrival. The victim is reported to have more than twenty stab wounds on his body.

A highly-placed source also informed that a Naga doctor in Goa, Dr. Toshebu Awomi, has been actively assisting in meeting medical formalities following the murder. It was informed that medical formalities, including post-mortem and embalming works are being actively assisted by Dr. Awomi.

Sources from Goa said Toshi Jamir and Vikram Thapa were once co-workers in a hotel in the tourist city. The murder may have been the tragic outcome of long-running differences between the two youths, sources said today quoting Panaji police officials. Vikram is said to have quit his job at the hotel following some differences with Toshi Jamir.

News agencies quoted police officials’ report that Jamir was returning to his accommodation at around 11:30 PM when he was attacked by Vikram Saba. Jamir is said to have been knifed repeatedly to the head, neck and torso. News agencies also quoted police as saying Jamir fell down the stairs on being stabbed by Vikram Saba. Following this, Saba fled the scene of the crime. Passers-by found the victim in a pool of blood and alerted the police.

Special Officer to Governor SC Jamir, Sebastian Zamvu informed that efforts are on to contact the family members of the deceased, in Nagaland. The father of Toshi Jamir is reported to be a police constable attached to Mon district’s police. The governor’s office is in touch with the administration and the police and that meeting formalities to the case are being pursued, Zamvu said over phone tonight.

Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved family, Zamvu said arrangements are underway to transport the mortal remains of the deceased to Nagaland.  Zamvu said there are a number of logistical encumbrances including inconsistent flight schedules that was hinted to be possible reasons for delay in reaching the body home sooner. Nonetheless, the governor’s Special Officer was hopeful that by Tuesday, June 16, all formalities would be met with and the body would reach Dimapur Airport in a few days time.
