Nagaland: 118 shops fined for violating COTPA 2003

Kohima, May 10 (MExN): In pursuance to State Government notification declaring all Educational Institutions, Government and Private Health establishments as Tobacco Free, National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Nagaland conducted joint enforcement drive in eleven NTCP districts on May 9.

A DIPR report stated that District Anti-Tobacco Squad penalised shops under Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA 2003) - two shops under Section 6(a), 114 shops under 6(b) and two shops under Section 7. 

Fine amounting to Rs 14,730 have been collected and samples from seized products are kept to be sent for testing at Guwahati.

In Kohima, the District Tobacco Control Cell Team along with the Enforcement Team of North Police Station and South Police Station conducted a surprise checking within Kohima town. 

Altogether, 34 shops were fined under Section 6 (b) got violation on Sale of Tobacco products near educational institutions under COTPA 2003, Dr Tumchobeni, Chief Medical Officer Kohima stated in a press release.
