Nagaland: 700 community volunteers under training to combat disaster

Kohima, May 14 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department in collaboration with the Home Guards, Civil Defense and SDRF and supported by National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is organizing the Aapda Mitra training commencing at Central Training Institute (CTI), HG, CD & SDRF, Toluvi, Dimapur from May 14. 

Aapda Mitra training is a centrally sponsored community volunteer programme. The training will cover 100 volunteers each from seven districts of the State namely Kiphire, Phek, Longleng, Peren, Mokokchung, Zunheboto and Wokha.

These districts have been identified keeping in mind that these are vulnerable and disaster prone areas, stated a press release issued by Lhouchalie Viya, IAS Secretary NSDMA.

During a brief inaugural programme held at CTI, Nawal Prakash, Joint Advisor, NDMA emphasized the importance of volunteering. He stated that disaster management is not a one man show but a collective responsibility. Informing on the shift of disaster management to a disaster risk reduction approach, he said, “It is important to prevent and reduce the risk of disaster.”

Further, he informed that a total of one lakh volunteers will be trained across the country out of which 700 will be from Nagaland.

Earlier, Medozhalie Pienyu, DCG HG, CD & SDRF informed that the CTI was established in the year 1989 and has been catering to various training programmes. 

Joint CEO, NSDMA, Johnny Ruangmei informed the participants that this training is going to be very useful even in their personal lives and urged them to it seriously to fully benefit from it. 

Achalie Viya, Secretary, NSDMA spoke on the importance of team work. He thanked the trainees from coming all the way even from remote villages and requested to go and further train their own villagers for the benefit of all.
