Governor reviews water supply, sanitation progress

Kohima, April 13 (MExN): Nagaland has achieved 94.91% household tap water coverage with over 3.45 lakh households connected under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) as of April 1, 2026, officials said on Monday.

The development was highlighted during a comprehensive review meeting chaired by Governor Nand Kishore Yadav with the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) at Naga Bhavan Conference Hall, Lok Bhavan, in Kohima.

PHED officials, led by Secretary Zarenthung Ezung, presented an overview of ongoing water supply and sanitation initiatives in the state, including progress under the JJM and Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen), stated a press release issued by PRO Lok Bhavan, Nagaland.

Several districts have made significant progress, with some blocks already achieving 100% Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC), the officials informed.

On the sanitation front, 1,258 villages, accounting for 88% of the state's villages, have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus, reflecting sustained efforts in solid and liquid waste management and community hygiene practices.

Success stories from various districts, including community-led water supply systems and waste management initiatives, were also showcased at the meeting, highlighting strong local participation and ownership.

The Governor reviewed key challenges, including depleting water sources, funding constraints and maintenance issues, and emphasised the need for sustainable water management practices, timely project execution and stronger community involvement.

He also stressed the importance of rainwater harvesting as a sustainable solution to address water scarcity, particularly in urban and water-stressed areas, and encouraged the department to promote its adoption across the state.
