Nagaland all out for consumers’ rights protection

DIMAPUR, DEC 23 (MExN): Nagaland along with the rest of the country will observe National Consumer Day on December 24 under the theme “Empowerment of consumer - assert rights, pursue remedies.” Nagaland state envisages providing speedy redress to consumers’ grievances under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, the rules made there under.

So far, the State Commission has disposed 64 cases and district forums 246 cases. The department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection has taken various steps for creating a strong consumer movement in the state.

The department will initiate mass awareness on consumer rights amongst consumers at grass root level. The department  also informed that it has launched a number of publicity/advertising campaigns throughout the state with the Consumer Awareness Committee etc. As part of this, hoardings on consumer rights have been erected and banners are displayed at prominent places in the state capital, Kohima and in district headquarters as well.

Apart from this, the department will distribute free folders, pamphlets, booklets to the public while posters will be pasted on roadsides and walls at conspicuous places for wider publicity. Likened literature in English have been translated into all major languages spoken by different tribal people for easy understanding of the procedures involved in filling consumer cases with consumer-disputes redressal agencies.

Seminars/workshops on consumer rights will be conducted with government officers, educational institutions and in public places, informed Joint Director, Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection, Nagaland, Kohima.
