AAN to observe World Fish Migration Day 

Dimapur, May 10 (MExN): The Anglers Association Nagaland (AAN) held its first official meeting at Naithu Resort on May 7. AAN President, Watinuksung Jamir, in his welcome address stated that as per record, Nagaland has nine major and 11 minor rivers with vast potentials of promoting ecotourism through angling. 

A press release from the associated said, Jamir in his address stated that there are about 149 different species of fishes found in the river bodies and out of which 118 species are endemic fresh water ornamental fishes. It was made known that about 48 species of fishes are non-classified and yet to be identified, it stated. Jamir stressed on the need to conserve and protect the river ecosystems and called upon the members to be a responsible citizen as an angler keeping in mind the motto, ‘where passion meets conservation.’

Further, the house discussed on the formation of a mobile team, inviting scientists on exploration of the river bodies for DNA sample collections and for proper study and identification of the non-classified species. AAN also discussed on identification of some river stretches for creating fish sanctuaries especially in the river bodies wherever it is convenient and found conducive.

AAN, Vice-Chief Patrons, Kechangulie Rio (Chabuo) encouraged the members on conservations of river bodies in promoting sustainable fishing. Isaac Zhimomi, the founder President expressed delight on the progress and growth of the association over the past years.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the outing office bearers Ricky Ozukum congratulated the new team and urged them to work with dedication and selflessly for the growth of the association. Derek D’Souza, Technical Advisor shared on the rivers of Nagaland, which is home to the mahseers and to practice on the catch and release by every angler. 

It was also informed that AAN will also observe the World Fish Migration Day throughout the state in coordination with all its district chapters. 

The meeting was chaired by AAN General Secretary, Mhonbemo Ngullie, and Executive member, Akai Awomi said the invocation and vote of thanks was delivered by AAN Vice-President, Hokivi Chophi.
