Dimapur, September 27 (MExN): State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Diethono Nakro highlighting the status of implementation Rights of Persons With Disabilities (RPwD) Act 2016 in Nagaland, pointed out that Nagaland is practically in zero level in implementation of various provisions of the act. 


She was presenting a PowerPoint during the sensitization and awareness campaign programme on Rights of Persons With Disabilities (RPwD) Act 2016 for head of departments and its nodal officers of Dimapur district was conducted at DC’s conference hall on September 27.


It was organized by Mission Mode Team (Accessibility India Campaign) in collaboration with the office of the State Commissioner for Disabilities. 


A DIPR report stated that Nakro in her presentations on RPwD Act 2016 overview, status of implementation and way forward highlighted the various provisions that are laid down in the RPwD Act. 


She mentioned the need for identifying posts in government establishment which can be held respective category of persons with benchmark disabilities and periodic review of the identified posts, adding that the responsibility of the government is to ensure that person with disabilities enjoy the right to equality, life with dignity and respect for his or her own integrity equally with others.


Expressing serious concern over the accessibility and inclusion, the Commissioner said that the government must comply with laid down standards of the accessibility for the physical environment, transportation and information and communication including appropriate technologies. She said that it is something intentionally designing the world to exclude everyone, making sure that no one is excluded. 


During the meeting Director, Prodigal Home, K. Ela have a presentation on Disability scenario in Nagaland, Challenges & Opportunities while court directives/legal implications on non compliance was highlighted by Advocate, Guwahati High Court Kohima Bench, Apila Sangtam. The programme was chaired by ADC, Lovitoli Sema.
