Nagaland: Bethany Sisters celebrate 100th foundation day

Kohima, July 16 (MExN): Sisters of the Little Flower, known as ‘Bethany Sisters’ celebrated the 100th foundation day of their congregation in Christ King Convent, Bara Basti, Kohima on July 15.

Most Rev James Thoppil DD, Bishop of Kohima Diocese celebrated the Centenary Holy Mass in Christ King Church and eight other priests concelebrated the Mass with the Bishop. A fellowship meal followed the Eucharistic celebration which was attended by the sisters and members of the laity.

During his homily, Bishop Thoppil applauded the good works done by Bethany Sisters in Christ King Church, School and Hostel in Kohima, Holy Cross Church, Holy Cross School and Christ School in Dimapur, and St Joseph Church, School, Hostel and dispensary in Viswema.

“Ever since their entry into Nagaland in 1969, Bethany Sisters have worked relentlessly towards the improvement of Naga society, and their contribution has been highly significant,” said the Bishop. “They are known for their hospitality, dedication and efficiency, and commitment to whatever cause they espouse, be it education, social work or medical care,” he added.

According to a press release, Bethany Sisters were founded by Monsignor RFC Mascarenhas on July 16, 1921, in the coastal city of Mangalore in Karnataka with four lady teachers of his school with the aim of making education available to the poor and less privileged of those days, specially girls and the rural poor. Today, over 1400 Bethany Sisters make their presence felt in almost all the states of India and nine foreign countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. 

The year-long centenary celebration that began on July 11, 2020, saw the launch of several projects such as training hundred youths for leadership and building hundred houses for the less privileged. “The entire Bethany Congregation had been preparing for the centenary celebration through prayers, seminars, spiritual retreats and various good works. Celebrations were also held in Holy Cross Convent, Dimapur and St Joseph Convent, Viswema,” the release added.
