Phek Town, the district headquarters of Phek district is turning into a complete package sanitary town with the efforts of NGOs and community participation. Phek Town Chakhesang Students’ Union (PTCSU) has initiated social work (Sanitary Drive) every Saturday beginning this year.

Sanitary Drive, according to PTCSU, is to inculcate civic sense in students, increase awareness about the importance of ensuring sustainable sanitation for all and to make Phek town one of the cleanest towns in Nagaland.

The overall purpose of the sanitation drive is to provide a healthy living environment for everyone.

PTCSU President, Vechihu Khamo, said the PTCSU applied sanitation drive every Saturday on every school in Phek town based on a roster system of participating schools.

Kuzholiizo (Azo) Nienu, MLA, 19th Phek A/C, conveyed appreciation to PTCSU for their benevolent initiative. “Raising awareness and actively participating in making our land clean is the need of the hour and I am very encouraged to see the PTCSU initiating such activities,” said Nienu and assured of his support to the Union in the days to come for the betterment of Phek Town. “If you can dream it, you can do it,” he conveyed.

Vozelhou Zumu, a government employee serving in the district, said, “We used to adhere to the call of social works during Republic Day, Independence Day, VVPIs’s visit. But social work, I feel, should be a daily affair of each and every individual to stay environmentally clean.”

“I acknowledge and salute the Phek Town Chakhesang Students' Union for keeping Phek Town clean by their voluntary social work every weekend. PTCSU's vision to maintain Phek Town as the cleanest town in Nagaland by their selfless free social service on regular basis deserves appreciation and cooperation from one and all,” said Dr. K. Hoshi.

A student organization carrying out such social responsibility in the form of ongoing program is laudable and unique, he added.

A PTCSU official informed that not only general public, even district administration, public leaders, teachers are appreciating the PTCSU’s sanitation drive since it involves schools.

Phek Town has been declared a plastic free, smoking free & eco-friendly town in 2016 by Phek Town Youth Society as part of Clean-Green Operation.
