Nagaland bids adieu to outgoing Governor Acharya

Nagaland today accorded a grand farewell to outgoing Governor PB Acharya here at the state Banquet hall this evening.
Speaking on the occasion, Acharya said that he will hold the office till July 31 and new designated Governor R. Ravi will take charge on August 1.


He said that during five years, he had a good fellowship with the people of Nagaland and looked forward to continue association with the people in any capacity.


In democracy everybody is equal, he said and stressed on the need to empower and reach out to every people.
“We have potentiality to become a strong vibrant golden Nagaland,” Acharya said and at the same time urged the universities to address the need of the state. University should not only be the centre of knowledge but should be the centre of development, he said.


Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said that Acharya did not come to Nagaland as a stranger, but rather, he was already a well known figure as he had been closely associated with the entire north eastern region since the 1960s.


“His contributions in social service, education and humanities were already well known as he assumed the charge of Governor. We were fortunate to have such an eminent personality as our Governor,” Rio said.
Rio said that Acharya genuine concern for the weaker and underprivileged sections of society is evident from all his activities.


Rio extended appreciation of the entire state to Acharya and his lady wife for the services rendered to Nagaland.  “Your support to the Government's efforts towards realizing permanent peace and solution to the Naga political issue is well appreciated,” he said.


We know that you will always be the best goodwill ambassador of Nagaland and the Naga people. Even as you leave, be assured that you carry the best wishes of the Naga people and our prayers are always with you, he said.


“As Constitutional head of the state, he has had a meticulous and exemplary tenure. The state experienced a few political crises during the past few years but the Hon'ble Governor conducted himself in an impeccable manner and upheld the Constitution of India in exemplary fashion, for which he deserves to be complimented,” he said.


Rio thanked both Acharya and Kavita for opening the gates and doors of Kohima's Raj Bhavan to all sections of the people.


Opposition leader TR. Zeliang congratulated PB Acharya, the 19th Governor of Nagaland for successfully completing his 5 years tenure.


Recalling the Framework Agreement between GoI and the NSCN/GPRN which was signed on August 3, 2015 and now joined by 7 NNPGs, he said that Acharya had played his role in these important events first-hand which makes him an integral part of Naga history.


“I strongly believe that he will continue to support the Naga people for an amicable solution to the Naga Political problem, wherever he is, keeping his close association with all section of the Naga people and their cause,” he said.


“We will not forget your tireless effort to encourage the youths into entrepreneurship and your continuous support of the successive state governments for maintaining peace and unity for the development and progress of Nagaland,” the opposition leader said adding “ It is true that culture and tradition defines our identity and I hope, and believe, that your concept of upholding one’s culture, tradition and language in order to preserve one’s identity will continue to guide, encourage and inspire the upcoming Naga generation.”


Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton said Acharya proved himself as an able administrator with compassion and seasoned leadership qualities.


Our people will never forget his famous sentence that "Nagaland is rich but Nagas are poor." This phrase has certainly opened the eyes of our people that we should move out of our comfort zones, loosen our rigidity and think out of the box, Patton said.


The function was chaired by Temjen Toy, chief secretary Nagaland. Khedi Baptist Church, East Story and Harmonic Voices performed at the function.
