Nagaland BJP MLAs firmly against ‘anti-conversion’ bill

KOHIMA, APRIL 28 (NEPS): The Nagaland BJP has expressed serious concern over the directives of its national President Rajnath Singh to all BJP ruled states to come out with a legislation for the “anti-conversion bill.”

In an emergency meeting of the State BJP legislators and senior party workers held here at the party office today, they described the national BJP President’s remark as against the objective of the party. It said they did not receive any directive so far from him (Rajnath Singh). “But the party has decided to convey its strong resentment against such directives made by the national president as this will go against the interests of the people, especially the northeast region at a time when the people look towards the party with full confidence,” it pointed out. It also stated such a remark would go against the very tenets of the party constitution.”

The party constitution says, “The Party aims at establishing a democratic state which guarantees to all citizens irrespective of castes, creed or sex, political, social and economic justice, equality of opportunity and liberty of faith and expression.

“The Party shall bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of India as by law established and to the principles of socialism, secularism and democracy and would uphold the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.” Therefore, the statement made by the party’s national president would not go well with the tenets of the constitution, besides going against the interest of the people in general.

The meeting also welcomed the ceasefire extension between the Government of India and the NSCN (K). The party also urged upon the Government of India to expedite the peace process with more sincerity and seriousness so as to bring early settlement to the Naga political issue.

Further, the meeting observed one minute silence for Chingen Konyak, ex-president of Mon District, who died recently. A mass prayer for the speedy recovery of Pramod Mahajan, National General Secretary of the party was also conducted.

They also conveyed heartfelt condolence to the bereaved family members of NNC leader, Yongkong, who died recently in London. Ministers Dr TM Lotha, Imtilemba Sangtam, Parliamentary Secretary and State BJP President MC Konyak, BJP MLA Lakhimong and senior party workers were among those who attended today’s emergency party meeting.
