Nagaland BJP slams NPF-Cong on 33% women quota

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 23 (MExN): Reiterating its earlier stand in favour of 33% on Woman reservation, the State BJP has flayed the present Nagaland legislative Assembly comprising of two major political parties, the NPF and the Congress rejecting the 33% women reservation bill. The party in a press note issued by its President Dr M. Chuba Ao and General Secretary K. James Vizo wondered as to why Congress being a national political party also joined hands with a regional party to drop the 33% reservation bill, whereas in the Centre the Congress is actively in favour  of implementing  the bill.

The Nagaland BJP was of the opinion that Article 371 (A) of the Constitution of India can be amended if the people so desire. The party as such has blamed both the NPF and Congress as “two- faced”.  “Till yesterday, the Govt. of Nagaland was so eager to implement the bill saying that it is  a Supreme court ruling, now suddenly they have changed  their stand after getting some opposition from some corner”, the BJP stated.

The press note also pointed out that recently, the JLF- Joint Legislature forum consisting  of 60 members went up to Delhi to meet the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Central leaders of India to apprise about the ongoing peace talk between GOI and Indo-Naga political settlement.  “In case of any settlement, a constitutional amendment is required. Likewise in this matter also, amendment is possible if required”, the BJP stated.

By rejecting the women reservation, the Nagaland  Legislative Assembly  has betrayed and  deceived their mothers, sisters and daughters of the their  privilege by not granting 33% woman seat reservation, the BJP leaders stated.

BJP was of the opinion that if voted to power in the state, the party shall implement the bill without hesitation since the party feels that granting 33% seat to the women will not fade away the economics of the people, its resources and age old Naga traditions.  “Rather Naga women will be able to count down 30 or more years to compete with other women in the country”.
