Kohima, July 11 (MExN): Jointly organised by the Department of Rural Development (RD) and Public Health Engineering (PHED), an orientation and capacity building on implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) & Swachh Bharat Mission- Gramin (SBM-G) was held at RD Directorate Conference Hall on July 11 under the chairmanship of Director RD, Azenuo Pienyü.

The Publicity Cell, RD Directorate, Kohima in a press release said the Principal Secretary, PHED, E Mhonbemo Patton informed that JJM is envisioned to provide free universal safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections to all rural households. Towards this, he stressed on the importance of participation of every village council and its sub-committees to play an active role for successful implementation of the Village Action Plan on water supply and sanitation.

Patton also highlighted on the role of the committees to play a key role in motivating the villagers to contribute towards operational expenses and sustainable maintenance of water supply system in the villages.

He further made a fervent appeal to all officers responsible to take this opportunity provided by the GoI and give their best effort in order to benefit the rural areas. 

Delivering the welcome address, Commissioner & Secretary, RD, Neposo Theluo mentioned that the mission was launched by the Prime Minister of India on August 15, 2019 with an aim to provide drinking water supply to the rural households through Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) by 2024 and to provide water connection to public institutions. Terming it essential for the two departments to work together specially in matters of water related activities and sanitation works, Theluo also hoped that today’s orientation will prove to be fruitful and successful in the implementation of JJM and SBM.

The orientation programme was marked by presentation on (JJM) by Er N Yanger Pongener, EE (Tech), PHED and presentation on SBM-G by Er Ichirang Zeliang, EE (Sanitation & WSSO), PHED followed by interaction with the participants.
