
13.3% of total urban households in Nagaland live in slum areas

The total percentage of the urban population in Nagaland living in slum areas is as high as the percentage in Uttar Pradesh. According to the Census 2011 report of Nagaland, 13.3% of the total urban population households in Nagaland are living in slum areas. According to the report, Nagaland is the only state in the country where the number of households possessing both telephone/mobile phones in the slum areas exceeds the number of households in the non slum areas (Total urban- 6.4%; non-slum- 6.3%; slum- 6.7%).
It also states that 73.8% of households in Nagaland own their houses, while 21.4% live in rented houses. Ironically, Bihar which is ranked the poorest state in India has as many as 96.8% households living in their own houses and only 2.1% live in the rented houses.
The report also reveals that 38% of Nagas have television, which is considerably high compared to Bihar, where 14.5% households have television. The percentage of households owning televisions in India is 47.2%. In Nagaland, 151,670 households have television set which is 37.92% of all households. 65.76% of households in Dimapur district own television sets, whereas only 13.66% of households in Mon district own television sets.
74% of households in Dimapur Sadar own television sets but Shangnyu circle and Phomching circle in Mon district do not have a single household with a television set. Only 1% of households own television sets in Panso circle (Tuensang), Kebai Khelma circle (Peren) and Khongsa circle (Kiphire) of the state. In Kiphire district only, 13% households own a television set.
There are 4,481 houses in Nagaland, which still do not have lighting. Mon district has the highest number of such houses with no lighting with a figure of 1,781 and Peren district has only 53 houses which do not have any lighting. Out of 399,965 households in the state, 76,734 (19.11%) households are located in Dimapur district. The district with the lowest number of households is Longleng with a figure of 11,580 (2.89%).
Nagaland has 139, 523 households where the family members have at least one bank account with 42,503 (30.46%) of such households being located in Dimapur district. Longleng district has only 1, 574 of such households. Only 9.6% of homes in Dimapur district do not have car/TV/computers as compared to 58.6% and 56.2% homes in Kiphire and Mon districts respectively, which do not own any of these assets.
