Festive season is inching closer as are better roads in Dimapur and Kohima. The Nagaland State Government on Saturday took the decision to go for immediate construction of roads and other amenities in Dimapur and Kohima as an urgent measure.

Interacting with media persons here today, Neiba Kronu, Minister for Planning & Coordination and Land Revenue, said the decision was taken “so that we can have better roads and amenities before the festive and Christmas season.”

Kronu said the decision was taken in a combined meeting called by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio with Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton, Planning Department, PWD Department and Urban Development Department.

He said the meeting decided to send a proposal to the Government of India for funding road development works. If the fund does not come in time, the Government will use whatever resources are available to the State to carry forward the road development activities, he said.

The Minister said there are times when things do not come as we expect and the Government could not reach out to the people on time because of “reasons beyond our control.”

He recalled the PDA Government, in its first cabinet sitting, decided to focus on improvement and repairing of roads across the State.   However, he said, while things were under process the parliamentary elections came and election model code of conduct came into force, thereby hampering road development activities.

The floods further hampered the activities.   Kronu said the Government of the day knows that “the desire of the people is good roads.”

“To my understanding, if we can have good roads and good electric power generation, the other things can slowly catch up,” he said.

Now rainy season is almost over and “we are trying our best to expedite the work.” He said in order to reach out to the people, “The PDA Government is trying its best to fulfill our commitment given to the people even though things have been delayed.”

He requested the public to give full co-operation so that the projects are not delayed.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday at mass social work programme in Kohima announced that starting with Kohima and Dimapur, “we are going to build good roads in one year.”Further, he said that the PWD (R&B) will also give special care to roads in all district HQs followed by the sub divisions.

Consequently, the Nagaland State Government, through the Office of the Chief Engineer, PWD (R&B), has issued tender notice inviting bids for improvements of Dimapur and Kohima city roads.
