Nagaland: ‘Climate Change is for real’

“Today, we feel the heat. We can see that climate change is for real,” said Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, Nagaland’s School Education & SCERT, Advisor while addressing a plantation-cum-cleanliness drive at the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama on June 5.

The world has become warmer by 1.1 degrees Celsius, which is a matter of concern for all across the globe, he said. Dr Yhome informed that all the countries of the world came together and United Nations came out with a framework on climate change and decided that all over the world should not cross 2 degrees Celsius by 2050.

Stressing on the need for people’s participation in climate change mitigation, he said, “If we cannot act locally, we cannot think globally.” We must protect our world, Dr Yhome said and stressed on the need to go for plantation of more trees “so that we can breathe clean.”

With the theme ‘Go Green, Breathe Clean,’ the Angami Youth Organization (AYO in collaboration with Department of School Education and Samagra Shiksha Nagaland undertook the plantation-cum-cleanliness drive. The occasion, marking the World Environment Day, propagated the need to conserve environment and made a clarion call to each and every individual to stop polluting the environment.

Around 200 Cherry, Bottle Brush, Persimmon, Cinnamon, Nectarine, Pitch, Peepal tree and palm saplings have been planted on the day.

Marking the start of the plantation, Dr Yhome planted Nectarine sapling above Bamboo Hall, Kisama, followed by ex-MLA Medo Yhokha, Samagra Shiksha Nagaland State Mission Director Temsunaro Aier, school education director Wonthungo Tsopoe, other officials, frontal organizations and school children.

Officials from State Council of Educational Research & Training, Nagaland, Nagaland Board of School Education, District Education Officer Kohima, Angami Public Organization and Angami Students’ Union also joined the event including students from Government Primary School Kigwema ‘C,’ Government Middle School KIgwema ‘A,” Government Middle School Phesama, St Paul School Phesama, Nagaland Police Central School Phesama, Government High School Kigwema and Japfu Christian College, Kigwema.

‘A cleaner and vibrant Kohima’
AYO President, Kesosul Christopher Ltu recalled that AYO during the presidentship of Khrielievi Chiisi in 2010, has adopted a resolution to protect the environment and wild life.

Till today, AYO uphold the principle of protecting our environment and wildlife through the connected efforts of every village youth organization, he said.

Ltu informed that the present AYO team came out with a humble campaign, seeking the support of the entire community on the theme “A cleaner and vibrant Kohima.”

We plan to reach out to every school children to promote and inculcate the good habit of cleanliness and hygiene, Ltu added.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by AYO environment secretary Kedoroko Casavi while vote of thanks was proposed by AYO Vice President, Dievi Yano.
