Nagaland Chief Minister, Dr Neiphiu Rio has proposed that the recruitment process for Grameen Dak Sevak (GDS) under the Department of Post, Government of India, in Nagaland be referred to a select committee for a comprehensive review.

His proposal came in response to concerns raised by MLA Dr Tsielhoutuo Rhutso during a Zero Hour discussion in the Assembly on March 4 who expressed concern over the dwindling opportunities for indigenous Nagas in the postal service.

Concurring with the concerns raised by the MLA, Dr Rio also said that the state has not notified any local/state language as third language, Naga languages are therefore, not included in the selection criteria. As a result, he said, the recruitment process is open to applicants from across India, who is proficient in English or Hindi, and citizens of Nagaland are deprived of these services and losing out on potential employment as well.

However, he also noted that the persons from outside Nagaland getting posted in the state are not able to deliver their services in Nagaland who struggle to communicate in the local languages.

“In light of these concerns, there is a clear case for the state to intervene in the interest of our citizens and the youth in particular” he stated proposing that the matter be referred to a select committee for a comprehensive examination of the issue.
