Nagaland CM concerned by increase in drug abuse

Cautions uniformed personnel involved in nexus

Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio today expressed concern at the alarming increase of drug abuse in Nagaland and called for a war on the abuse and supply of drugs and illicit alcohol. 

While speaking at the 36th annual general body meeting of the Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland (IRCSN) at Raj Bhavan Kohima today, the CM said that the problem of drug abuse is now not just confined to the border areas but has spread throughout the state. 

The Chief Minister also expressed concern over uniformed personnel being involved in the nexus. He said policemen involved in use and peddling of drugs are not contributing to society but posing a threat to their profession too. He called upon all to come together and educate people while acting together with the government against drug abuse. 

The CM, who is also the IRCSN Vice President meanwhile stated that the values of Naga society are similar to the motto of the Red Cross Society to serve people in need. “We are all from villages and when we go to villages, we see how people love one another,” Rio said.

In case of calamity, it is the community that organizes and rebuilds so that families don't bear the hardship alone. This kind of kindness and care for one another is in our culture and tradition, he said. 

Rio also mentioned pioneers like former CM Vizol, who served the Red Cross Society wholeheartedly and hoped that new members will carry forward the message of being selfless. 

Gov calls for spirit of humanity & compassion
Meanwhile, Nagaland Governor and IRCSN President, La Ganesan said that it is imperative for the society to foster strong partnerships and collaborations with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the community to build a resilient and compassionate society that stands ready to support and uplift those in need.

“As we look ahead to the coming year, we must strive to enhance our efforts and expand our reach. The Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland has always been driven by the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. It is these principles that guide our actions and enable us to make a difference in the lives of those who need it the most,” Ganesan asserted. 

The Governor commended the efforts of the Red Cross in providing relief and support to fire victims of Solou village in Myanmar where more than 59 houses were burnt. “The Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland has been at the forefront of delivering aid and relief supplies to those affected even beyond the boundary. This commendable act of solidarity demonstrates the values and principles that underpin the Red Cross movement,” he pointed out. 

Ganesan also mentioned the initiative of the IRCSN for their swift response and assistance in times of crisis. In times of distress, the Red Cross has consistently been there to provide immediate relief and support to the affected families. The tireless efforts of our volunteers, who put their own lives on the line to save others, deserve our utmost appreciation, he added.

The Governor also recognized that the IRCSN has always played a vital role in promoting and organizing blood donation drives across the state. Blood donation is a noble act that saves countless lives, and the Red Cross has been instrumental in creating awareness and encouraging people to donate blood, he said. 

In addition to blood donation, the Red Cross has been actively involved in organizing medical camps in remote areas of Nagaland, he added. Ganesan said these medical camps have been pivotal in providing essential healthcare services to those who lack access to proper medical facilities. 

The Governor urged the members to join hands and actively participate in the various initiatives and programmes of the IRCSN. “Whether it be through volunteering, making donations, or spreading awareness, every contribution matters; together, we can create a society that embodies the true spirit of humanity and compassion.”

He mentioned that commitment to humanitarian values has made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals and communities. Let us carry forward the noble legacy of the Red Cross and continue to serve as a beacon of hope and support for those in need, the Governor appealed.

During the programme, reports were presented by Akhale V Khamo, General Secretary, IRCSN; and awards were given out by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.
