A one-day surgical camp under the Chief Minister’s Mobile Operation Theatre (CM-MOT) initiative was held at the conference hall of Dr Motsuo Memorial District Hospital, Wokha on July 26.
The event was graced by Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA, Government of Nagaland, as the chief guest, and Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe, MLA, as the guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Rhutso stated that the CM-MOT initiative was introduced to address the challenges faced by rural populations in accessing healthcare services, particularly surgical care. He noted that despite holding Ayushman cards under the Chief Minister Health Insurance Scheme (CMHIS), many villagers are unable to utilise them due to high transportation costs to urban centres like Kohima and Dimapur.

“This programme brings the hospital to the patients. It was officially flagged off by the Governor of Nagaland on January 26 this year,” he said.
Dr Rhutso also acknowledged the commitment of his medical team, which consists of professionals from various tribes, and emphasised the importance of unity and collective service.

MLA Mhonbemo Humtsoe commended Dr Rhutso and his team for their dedicated efforts. He described the initiative as a “great blessing” for the people and said that Dr Rhutso, popularly known as “Dr Ato,” has become a household name in Wokha. He added that while elected representatives can provide support, medical professionals offer healing both physically and mentally.
Speaking to the media, Dr Kenie, anaesthesiologist and team member, informed that the camp performs almost all types of surgeries except for eye and ear procedures, which require strict sterile environments. He stated that the surgeries are conducted using laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques, minimising the need for large incisions.
The team includes Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso and Dr Moatemjen Ozukum (laparoscopic surgeons), Dr Kenie (anaesthesiologist), Dr Rovino (surgeon), and Lanu (dentist). The team also handles a large number of dental cases, sometimes exceeding 150 per day.
According to Dr Kenie, the CM-MOT team has covered 17 locations across nine districts and performed over 500 surgeries to date. The team arrived in Wokha at 1:00 am after completing a camp in Tseminyu, and planned to conduct approximately 20 surgeries, both major and minor, during the day. The team will next move to Bandhari after a day of rest.
A total of 177 individuals from Wokha registered for the camp. The event was attended by hospital staff, district health officials, local leaders, and beneficiaries.
The DMMDH administration expressed appreciation to the Government of Nagaland and the Department of Health and Family Welfare for extending essential surgical services to the district under the CM-MOT programme.
