Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio wins vote of confidence

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who is heading the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), today won the vote of confidence in the State assembly.  

Rio proved his majority on the floor of the House by obtaining 33 votes of the 59 polled votes while 26 legislators from Naga People’s Front (NPF) voted against the Chief Minister in the first session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) on March 13.  

Earlier, Nagaland’s Governor PB Acharya had requested Rio to prove his majority on the floor of the House on or before March 16.  

Pro-tem Speaker Mmhonlumo Kikon presided over the first session.  

Vikho-o Yhoshu is the new NLA Speaker  

Meanwhile, the first session of the 13th NLA also elected Er. Vikho-o Yhoshu of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) as the Speaker of the House.  

The PDA had nominated Yhoshu for the speaker while the opposition NPF fielded the former Speaker Dr. Imtiwapang for election to the post.  

The speaker was elected by secret ballot and Yhoshu defeated the NPF candidate by 7 votes.  

The former got 33 votes of the 59 polled votes while the latter got the votes of 26 NPF members.  

The ruling People s Democratic Alliance (PDA) has 34 MLAs in the 60-member house. Its partners NDPP have 18, BJP – 12, JD (U)-1, NPP – 2 MLAs besides an Independent.  

The Assembly will have a long break from March 14 to 21 and on resumption see presentation and passage of budget on March 22.
