Nagaland coconut growers boost knowledge

Dimapur, May 27 (MExN): An exposure trip for coconut farmers of Nagaland was organized by All Nagaland Coconut Growers Association and Coconut Development Board Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, Guwahati, Assam. It was sponsored by the Department of Horticulture, Government of Nagaland. The team was headed by Er. Kedovisie Bizo, President,  All  Nagaland Coconut Growers Association  as  team  leader and Nihito Muru, Jt. Secretary  as co-team leader.
ANCGA President, Er. Kedovisie Bizo in a press note stated that the team visited the traditional coconut farms at Kerala and Tamil Nadu during April 26 to May 10. The trip started with first visit to Central Plantation and Crops Research Institute (CPCRI)  Coconut Research Institute of India, Kayamgulam, Kerala where the farmers were brief with the management of coconut gardens, Selection of mother palms, Seed  nut collection, Nursery raising and Management and selection of quality seedlings and later with field visit at CPCRI campus on April 30.
The team proceeded to Kochi on May 2 and on way visited Central coir Research Institute and Coconut Handicrafts Center, at Allappuzha, Kerala. They also visited Coconut Development Board Demonstration Farm at Neriagulam and Coconut Technology Development Center at Alwaye on May 3. The farmers were brief about developmental schemes run by the Coconut Development Board for the benefit of coconut farmers in Coconut Technology Centre, various methods of coconut processing and quality test analysis methods were demonstrated.
In Polachi on May 4 they were received by United Coconut growers Association of South India and staffs of Coconut Development Board, Chennai. During their stay at Polachi, the team visited Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, Coconut Research Station at Aliyarnagar, Shakti Coconut products, Polachi, Tamil Nadu where various coconut products were manufactured, they also visited various Coconut Coir Industries and lay out of demonstration farms at Anulappampatti, Polachi where cluster of 25 farmers over a stretch of 25 hectares of coconut plantation is being benefitted from CDB schemes.
The president in the note added that Nagaland coconut growers were surprised to learn how much a coconut farmer can earn. In one Hectare of plot having 175 coconut and 600 banana suckers as intercrop, per year in return was Rs.3.00 lakh. That is about 1.75 lakh from coconut and Rs. 1.25 lakh from banana, whereas in Nagaland it is difficult to get even Rs 1.00 lakh from one Hectare coconut garden.
They were also pleased to meet T. A. Khrishnaswami Gounder, President, United Coconut Grower’s Association of South India, who took the team for field visit at his Coconut Farm and encouraged the team members to work with sincerity, dedication and honesty. The team visited the Jain Irrigation Industries and its Technology Development Farms and later interacted with the Vice-President, Kothari on May 6 where it concluded its exposure tour and returned back to Dimapur on May 10.
