The Nagaland College of Music & Fine Arts (NCMFA) was inaugurated in Kohima on November 23. Located at Khrutshiezhü below Phezhu Jotsoma, T. Khel model village Kohima, the NCMFA was inaugurated by Temjen Toy, IAS, Chief Secretary Nagaland.
Acknowledging the newly inaugurated music institution, Temjen Toy reminded the gathering about the early years where Nagas had to travel outside the State to pursue music, but the setting up of such institutions with necessary infrastructure and facilities, has made music accessible for many Nagas at home. While appreciating the gift of music among Nagas, the Chief Secretary also asserted that talent alone is not enough but honing of one's talent is equally essential. Toy lauded the efforts of Vesato Theluo, Managing Director NCMFA and his family for setting up music institutions in the state. Toy expressed the hope that the NCMFA forge the way for excellence in the field of music and Arts.
“Music is part and parcel of Naga people but we need professionalism in music," said Dr. Hovithal Sothu, Project Director TaFMA who also reminded that TaFMA was set up by the state government with the vision to develop music in the State. Although, music was not given attention in the past which left many to struggle, Dr. Sothu encouraged parents and guardians to provide equal importance to music as a career option the growing avenues in music today. The passion and vision of the few in the past in setting up music institutions is bearing fruit today, viewed Dr. Sothu. Updating the gathering on the upcoming Hornbill Festival, Dr. Sothu mentioned that the Festival will witness varied musical experiences with as the performances and events by Indian Council for Cultural relations, Grammy award winner Mohan Bhatt, Korean bands and UK team, besides many local talents.
In her speech, Dr. Vivee Peseyie, Dean Margaret Shishak School of Music informed that Nagaland has three colleges offering bachelor course in music which includes the NCMFA. With the field of music developing in Nagaland, Dr. Peseyie urged parents to encourage their children to pursue music as a profession.
The inaugural event was chaired by by Aleu üsou, with invocation and bible reading by CBCK Rev. Dr. Kevekhalo Lasuh, Senior Pastor, CBCK. The event also witnessed special music presentations.
