Two persons – a woman and a man – were arrested by the police in connection to the suspected murder of Inspector Neiphretuo Metsieo, whose dead body was found on September 15 after he was reported missing since September 7. The arrests were made separately on September 16.

According to a source quoting the Ukhrul police, a 21 year-old woman was taken into custody from Ukhrul by a team of police from the North Police Station, Kohima, on September 16 evening. The woman was reportedly detained by the Manipur police in Ukhrul. It could not be ascertained when the woman was detained by them.

The Kohima police registered a ‘Zero FIR’ at the North PS where the family of the late Inspector filed a missing person report.

It was followed by the arrest of a 24 year-old man, said to be the main accused, by security personnel at the Guwahati Railway Station. Alleged to have been on the run, the source informed that the man was arrested by the Assam Police in coordination with Railway Protection Force based on an alert sounded by the Nagaland Police.

As per the source, the man had boarded a train to Guwahati from Dimapur on Sunday. The train reached Guwahati at around 6:30 pm.

The Kohima police confirmed the development late in the evening but declined to divulge details citing “the sensitive nature of the case.”

The police have still to give an official version of the turn of events and motive. The initial reports though point to car-theft as a possible motive. The arrested duo, as per the reports, had hitched a ride in Metsieo’s car (Mahindra Scorpio) while on his way to Pfutsero from Kohima on September 7. A third person, said to be a police constable, was also picked up along the way, who got down at Zuketsa. Metsieo, along with the Mahindra Scorpio, was reported missing since September 7 by his family on September 11.

His decomposed body was found on September 15 at a spot falling between Zapami and Lasumi villages close to Zuketsa town. Queried on the cause of the death, the Kohima police maintained it cannot jump to conclusions pending the Post Mortem report.

A civilian volunteer, who was part of the search teams, stated that two bullets were found in the head of the deceased.
