Dimapur, June 17 (MExN): The Dimapur Police today stated that it has busted a major auto fraud racket, arresting three members of the alleged criminal gang and recovering 15 assorted vehicles.
In a press release, the PRO Dimapur Police identified the arrested individuals as Mughaboto (39 years), Yambothung Ngullie (22 years), and Kinigha Chishi (23 years).
The 15 vehicles were recovered from different locations and have been handed over to their rightful owners, it added.
According to the police, the vehicles were allegedly mortgaged to third parties without the knowledge of the original owners.
Modus operandi
As per the police, the modus operandi of the fraudsters involved either approaching owners willing to sell their vehicles posing as used car dealers or simply renting cars from rental companies.
Once they took custody of the vehicles, these were allegedly offered as collateral or mortgaged for loans to third parties—without the owners’ consent or knowledge.
Using this method, the accused are said to have defrauded multiple private vehicle owners and rental companies, raising substantial amounts of money through loans from unsuspecting individuals, the statement claimed.
The Dimapur Police has now “pulled the brakes” by nabbing the trio.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway, the police added.
