The Directorate of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection department, Nagaland has issued some hints to the consumers through a pamphlet.
Making the pamphlet available during a consumer awareness programme here Monday, the DLM &CP advised the consumers to demand accurate weights and measures in their purchase just as they demand accurate change from the cashier.
“Giving short weight or measure or short delivery is an offence under the Nagaland Legal Metrology Act, 2009,” it stated.
The pamphlet stated that all weights, measures and weighing and measuring instruments are required to be verified periodically and stamped by the legal metrology & consumer protection department under the law.
It stated that the trader is required to use the beam scale suspended from hook or stand to avoid manipulation by hand to his own advantage.
Buy your requirements in round metric units like 10 grams, 100 grams, 500 grams, 1 kilograms etc. Thus your calculation become easier, it informed the consumers.
DLM &CP stated that the petrol pumps, being measuring instruments, are periodically checked by the Inspector of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection for accurate delivery of petroleum products.
In case of suspected short delivery, report the matter to the Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection department.
When buying land or a plot for house building, always buy in terms of hectares or squire metres. Acres and yards are no longer recognized under the law, it stated.
While buying cooking gas, see the net content is marked on the gas cylinder and the seal is intact.
While buying a pre-packed commodity ensure that it bears the name of the commodity, net contents, date of manufacturers, packing, name of manufacturer/packer, and the retail sale prices.
When such declarations are not marked/labeled on the body of the container of carton etc, it is offence under the packaged commodities Rules 2011, it stated.
It informed that the Legal Metrology & Consumer protection department performs a basic service to the community and protects the interests of buyers and sellers of commodities, alike.
“Be acquainted with your local legal metrology & consumer protection inspector and consult him or seek assistance whenever you need the help of legal metrology and consumer protection department,” the pamphlet stated.
