Nagaland State Minister for School Education & SCERT, Yitachu, today said that every year about 200-300 government teachers retire from service, and the department has put up a proposal to the State Government to lift the ‘ban’ on teachers’ recruitment.
In this, Yitachu asserted that once the cabinet approves the proposal, exam will be conducted accordingly in all fairness.
“There will be justice. Equal opportunity will be given,” he said while addressing 4th Graduation Day of Modern Institute of Teacher Education here.
He regretted that Nagaland State is still lacking in B.Ed degree holders in the teaching profession. Nevertheless, he expressed happiness that many are now taking it up as B.Ed degree is a necessity for teachers.
He said the State Government has made B.Ed compulsory for teachers because of which only those with the requisite B.Ed qualification are allowed to sit for the recently conducted Teachers Eligibility Test. He also said that even the in-service government teachers are undergoing batch wise B.Ed training, while 14,000 more are yet to be covered.
It is mandatory for in-service teachers to get B.Ed qualification even for their annual increments and promotions, he said. The Minister expressed hope that the day is not far when the State will have all teachers with B.Ed qualification. Yitachu also called upon the teachers to be sincere in their duties to mould children from the pre-primary level for a better tomorrow.
The Minister said the education system in the State has been focused more on middle schools and above, but without a strong foundation at the lower levels there will be no improvement. Pre-primary level of education has to be seriously taken up, he noted.
Yitachu regretted that despite huge number of well trained and qualified teachers, government schools do not have many student enrollments.
There are about 2 lakh students in government schools, he said. Further, Yitachu urged upon the teachers to be willing to serve even in the remotest places so that they can reach out to the poorest of the poor and the weakest section of the society.
Modern Institute of Teacher Education (MITE) Managing Director Pelee Hekha said MITE is recognized by National Council for Teacher Education and UGC under section 2 (f) and affiliated to Nagaland University. It has two units of B.Ed with an intake capacity of 100 seats.
MITE produced 100% pass percentage in the first semester result followed by 88% in the second semester. As per 2015 result, out of 100 enrolled and 96 appeared, 84 students passed out with 81 and three placed in first and second division respectively. “We produced the best pass percentage in Nagaland,” he said, adding that Arenmenla Jamir secured the 4th Rank in the top 10 NU list.
MITE is located along AG Road, near SBI Lerie Branch Kohima.
