Dimapur, October 6 (MExN): All district administrations in Nagaland conducted awareness programme on violence against women and children in commemoration of 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The programme was conducted in collaboration with Mahila Shakti Kendra and Sakhi-One stop Center in their respective district hq on October 2.
Kiphire: In Kiphire the programme was held at Hopongkyu Memorial Hall Kiphire on October 2.Around 200 students and teachers from Loyala Higher Secondary School, Government Higher Secondary school, Zisaji Presidency College attended the programme apart from officials from Police Department and district legal officers.
Deputy Commissioner Kiphire, Sarita Yadav in her short speech encouraged the public to avoid alcohol abuse and to protect child marriage, women trafficking and child labour.
OSC Counsellor, Rolila S Sangtam assured that Sakhi OSC of Kiphire district would lend any help to protect and safeguard against perpetrators. Viliho Awomi, WWO Mahila Shakti Kendra addressed on women issues and rights. She also stated that the girl child is always debarred of her rights and in the fight against the perpetrators therefore, support is needed from the people.
T. Hothingkyu Sangtam Advocate DLSA stressed out the PIC SO Act 2012 and further urged the students to know their rights. DC Kiphire, Sarita Yadav, in her concluding remark, called upon the students to extend support in every aspect.
Longleng: Deputy Commissioner Longleng, M. Shayung Phom (NCS) addressed the awareness programme held at Badminton Indoor Stadium, Longleng. In his speech, the DC spoke on violence prevailing in Nagaland. He encouraged the woman folks to be brave and fight for their right and sensitized the woman about Helpline centres available in Nagaland.
The programme was chaired by C. Henchem Phom Administration (OSC), keynote address was given by Robin SDO(C) & Administrator LTC and special song was presented by Robhi Sangtam, EAC HQ Longleng.
M. Mane Phom Retainer Lawyer (LDLSA) spoke on legal service provided by Nagaland State legal Service authority for violence and crime against women and children. P Phungla phom WWO MSK-DLCW administered the pledge taking.
Mokokchung: In the programme held at Ongpangkong North, Mokokchung, the resources person, Moamenla Longkumer, Women Welfare Officer (DLCW), Mokokchung shared on different forms of violence against women and children and the effect on mental health. “Though Nagaland is considered as one of the safest places for women in India there are many crimes that go unreported due to the stigma attached to it and the character assassination of the victim,” Longkumer added. She encouraged the women to be bold and stand up for their rights when such situations occur.
She also shared on different services provided by for the women in case of emergency. Government schemes/programs, training and capacity building for the empowerment of women was also shared during the awareness.
Nukshinaro District Coordinator MSK chaired the programme.
Mon: Addressing the awareness programme, Ngepshom Konyak, Women Welfare Officer of Mahila Shakti Kendra-District Level Centre for Women spoke on women centric schemes. She stressed on the need for women to come together as one.
Lily Konyak C, Centre Administrator Sakhi-One Stop Centre (OSC) highlighted on Sakhi-One Stop Centre (OSC) and its functions. She spoke on the rights of women. Adding to that, she also highlighted on domestic violence and Human Trafficking.
Angun Lily, Counsellor OSC made a presentation on violence against women and its impacts. She spoke on the 10 Legal Rights for Women such as Right to Zero FIR, Right to Privacy, Right to Free Legal Aid, Right to Virtual Complaints, Right to Untimely Registration, No Sexual Harassment, Right to Confidentiality in the Police Station, Right to No arrest and Rape is a Crime.
The programme was attended by Konyak Nyupuh SekhoKhong (KNSK) Ward Presidents and 10 members each from the 11 Wards of Mon Town.
Peren: In Peren, the programme was graced by Advocate Asuni, Penal Lawyer of District Legal Services Authority who spoke on the topic Violence against women and Children-Vulnerable Section.
Lungngaulie, District Coordinator of Mahila Shakti Kendra gave a brief highlight about Mahila Shakti Kendra, Peheilusile Haisobe, Case Worker of Sakhi- One Stop Centre highlighted about Sakhi-One Stop Centre and Ibamsile Dwaswang, Centre Coordinator of Childline gave a brief highlight about Child Helpline.
It was attended by St. Xavier College, St.xavier Hr Sec School, Ikiesing Memorial School, Ibaung Thou Memorial School, Barail Valley Hr Sec School, Christian High School, Jalukie Town women welfare organization and Child Helpline.
Phek: The programme held at DC's Conference Hall, Phek was attended by over 100 participants. The target group included NGOs, shelter homes, women organisations, church-pastors, women leaders, youth leaders and youth-female members from each colony.
T. Lemlila Sangtam, SDO (Civil) in her keynote address highlighted the importance of stopping violence against women and children. She mentioned about atrocities faced by women such as oppression, discrimination and lack of opportunities.
Documentary on domestic violence was presented by Jitsiasa Nyusou, Centre Administrator, Sakhi-One Stop Centre.
Adv. Vevohulu Chizo, case worker, Sakhi-One Stop Centre Phek spoke on various crimes against women and children/vulnerable section. She stressed on topic such as POCSO Act, IPC, Domestic Violence Act, 2005 and Cyber Crime.
During an open discussion, participants from different NGOs and women organizations shared their views and concerns pertaining to issues relating to women and children in the society.
Tuensang: District level speech, essay and painting competition were organized at Tuensang to mark the day. Tonen Chang, District coordinator, PMMVY spoke on the theme Violence against Women and Child. He highlighted on the present context of the Naga society in reference to the discrimination and violence against women.
Tshelhiu Mekrisu, EAC Tuensang graced the event as a special guest. Chotsase Sangtam, DPO ICDS gave the welcome address. About 120 student from various schools participated in the competition and awareness programme.
The event was chaired by Cholungla, Centre Administrator Sakhi-OSC and concluded with the vote of thanks from P H Ramaikalo, SBP District Lead, Poshan Abhiyaan.
Zunheboto: During the programme held at town hall Zunheboto, Alovini Yepthomi, Centre Administrator Sakhi-OSC explained on Sakhi-OSC.
Litsenthung Kikon, EAC Zunheboto called for a safer district for women and children. He added that the primary cause of domestic violence is alcohol and urged the people to refrain from alcohol abuse. He also spoke on child marriage and women trafficking, child labour and that such practice should be totally restricted and checked. He stated that proper education is a must for women empowerment so parents should give proper education to children.
Nagaholi Awomi, Panel lawyer ZDLSA spoke on legal services provided by Nagaland State Legal Service Authority for women and children.
Wokha: In Wokha, EAC Wokha, Imtinungla Longkumer encouraged the womenfolk to master their courage to raise their voices against any form of violence for better tomorrow.
Advocate, Shanchobeni P Lotha, Project Assistant, Wokha District Legal Services Association (WDLSA) spoke on legal rights of women and children, while briefing on various form of violence that are against the law and are punishable by law.
Women Welfare Officer MSK Wokha, Dr. Wonjano Enni highlighted the roles and responsibilities of OSC & MSK and encouraged the participants to avail help and assistance from the crisis centre. She said that it is basic Right for every Human to be treated equally and with dignity in every society.
Dr Khesili, Medical Officer, IDSP Wokha emphasized on the importance of mental health. “It is time we break the silence and to avail help and assistance from the crisis centre,” she said.
