Nagaland: ‘Every day, we are responsible for our Earth’

Kohima, June 6 (MExN): The Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO) and Southern Angami Students' Union (SASU) has jointly observed World Environment Day (WED) at Dzükou valley on June 5 under the theme ‘Ura Uvie, Ura Ukhrie.’

A cleanliness drive was carried out at Dzükou valley and its vicinity to bring awareness and exhibit the love and care for God gifted Dzükou valley, said SAYO President Metekhrielie Mejura. “Every day, we are responsible for our Earth, in how to protect, preserve, conserve and save it to our one and only Earth,” he said.

On behalf of SAYO, Mejura acknowledged and extended gratitude to the individuals, groups, team, bodies, department, paramilitary forces and all concerned for undertaking cleanliness activities at Dzükou valley then and nowl. “Their contributions and sacrificed rendered shall always be cherished and remembered,” Mejura added.

Oriental College: NSS unit and Environmental Science Department of Oriental College, Kohima in collaboration with Royal Club Kohima conducted a cleanliness drive programme from the College campus to Razhü point Kohima as part of the ongoing celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, coinciding with WED. Members of Royal Club led the cleanliness drive together with students of Oriental College.

DAN: Development Association of Nagaland (DAN) under Morung Project observed WED in Phek, Zunheboto and Tuensang district. In Chizami Town under Phek district, the event was jointly organised by Morung Project (DAN) and Chizami Town Chakhesang Students' Union in collaboration with Self Employed Women's Association Chizami Town and Child Protection Committee Chizami Town. Altogether 500 Cosmos Flower saplings were planted and plastic waste collection drive was also carried out. In Zunheboto district, it was observed at Govt Middle School Amphoto, Govt High School South Point, Ghokishe Village, Natha Old Village, lukikhe village and Shevishe Village.  Poster competition, cleanliness drive, tree plantation and repurpose of plastic waste were carried out. All together 249 people participated. In Tuensang district, the event was observed in Govt Primary Schools, DC Hill Old Medical in which painting competition was carried out.

St Thomas Society: St Thomas Society, the parent society of MGM College and MGMHSS, Dimapur, celebrated WED in collaboration with Dimapur Forest Division. The event was held at the college campus and was attended by students, faculty, and staff members of the college, as well as representatives from the forest department. The keynote was delivered by Vivika A Sema, ACF of Dimapur Forest Division. In the poster making competition, the college and school students participated on the theme ‘Beat plastic pollution.’

NCC cadets: 80 cadets from the Senior Wing and Junior Wing with 9 ANOs of 1 Nagaland Girls Battalion NCC, Kohima participated in cleanliness drives, plantation drives, poster-making completions, etc. 700 handmade paper bags were distributed by the cadets of St Joseph College, Jakhama to local vendors who were also encouraged to use recyclable materials for packaging. In Longleng, NCC cadets in collaboration with Eco Club and other students, celebrated on the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’

NDPP Youth: The NDPP Youth Organisation and Women Organisation jointly carried out plantation drive across the State to commemorate WED. With Global warming and Climate Change becoming an environmental threat, the NDPP Youth Org through this joint effort intends to preserve nature and promote an eco-friendly environment for all.

NHB: Nkialwa Students’ Union (NHB) with Dy Ranger Namkipo Rangkau, Beat Forest Officer Athibung organised a plantation drive as part of WED at Nkialwa village and planted more than 1000 saplings of different plant species including cherry. Lungliabeu Nren, Vice President, NHBspoke on importance of plantations. Felicitation ceremony and career guidance were also held to felicitate the passed-out students with Ingautui Rangkau as the guest speaker. Later, career guidance for the students was given by Ilungchi Rangkau, General Secretary, NHB.

Tuli: Five schools from Tuli town and surrounding areas, Government Higher Secondary School Tuli, Don Bosco School Tuli, Zion School Tzudikong, North East Central School Halwating and Rajeshwari Karuna School Tuli came together in Rajeshwari Karuna School, Tuli to celebrate WED. The programme was organised by Rajeshwari Karuna School and the Wipro Earthian teams. The schools participated in various activities and competitions focusing on Lifestyle for Environment. The day-long activities ended with the plantation of trees around the Rajeshwari Karuna School campus.

Wokha: A social media campaign was initiated at Wokha Town to save Tsumang Lake, where the challenge was attended by around 200 environmental enthusiasts including senior citizens, school students from Mt Sinai, Wokha Circle Students’ Union, Tsumang Youths organization, Team Clean Wokha and women folks. The challenge was focused on cleaning Tsumang Lake, a remarkable landmark in the heart of Wokha Town, while tree saplings provided by Department of Forest were planted too.

In another location, 2300 cherry saplings were planted at Lakhuti village organized by Lakhuti Student’ Union (LkSU) in honor of 75th Year LkSU platinum jubilee celebration in December 2023. The programme was supported through the department of forest and land resources, Nagaland through the district office an event through ‘entry point activity under PMKSY-WDC 2.0.’

New Wokha Village and Old Riphyim Village also observed the day by planting and carrying out mass social work in and around the village and national highway stretch.

Meanwhile, the Lotha Officers’ Association (LOA) in collaboration with the Department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Nagaland (DEFCC) & Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED) organized an avenue plantation from Wokha Village to Yikhum Village.

CBC FO Tuensang: Central Bureau of Communication Field Office, Tuensang celebrated WED at Heningkunglwa village. Resource person Bendangsangla deliberated on importance of the day. Painting competition and tree plantation drive were also carried out. CBC FO Kohima also organised WED at Ngwalwa High School. Sensitisation programme, painting competition and tree plantation drive were conducted. 

CECS: Community Educational Centre Society in collaboration with GMS Dimapur Town, Wipro Foundation & PM Poshan observed WED. The GMS Dimapur Town Mascot 2023 was unveiled by Tsulaknok Ao, SDEO, Dimapur. The programme was flagged off by planting saplings by Acalu Assumi, AOE and Tsulaknok Ao, SDEO, Dimapur inside the GM School compound premises. 

NESMS: Nagaland Ecological and Sanitation Management Society (NESMS) in collaboration with Tuli Area Ongpangkong Students’ Union organised a tree plantation drive on the theme ‘Mission Life.’

Tuli Area Ongpangkong Students’ Union, President, Moa Jamir said the welcome note while NESMS, Co-ordinator, Temjen Jamir also addressed the gathering. The team planted Paulownia Tree, Pine Tree, Hybrid Coconut, Silver Oak etc. covering Tuli Police Station, Additional Deputy Commission Office, Dobashi Court, Tuli Town Baptist Church, Tuli Lenden Baptist Church pastor residence and Associate pastor women, NPCC ground (Patizung ward), Longli Lenden Fellowship premises and some public places.

NU: WED was observed at Nagaland University, Headquarters: Lumami. Based on the theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ events such as poster making, painting & essay competition were conducted. Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor NU was the chief guest and Dr N Senthil Kumar (IFS), Chief Conservator of Forests, Nagaland was guest of honour. Registrar Dr Abemo, Finance Officer Albert, Deans, Head of different Departments, Officials, Students were participated in the programme. WED message was delivered by Prof Ashutosh Tripathi, Department of EVS. A plantation drive was also carried out.

NECU: North East Christian University (NECU), Dimapur observed WED by planting saplings in the premises of the camps and also by organising an awareness programme on clean environment. It was organized under the aegis of the IQAC, NECU and attended by students, teaching and non-teaching staffs including people from the colonies. NECU Vice Chancellor, Prof (Dr) Darlando Khathing speech underscored the crucial role that citizens can play in ensuring a plastic free and clean environment while Purchilla Imchen, guest faculty at NECU presented a paper on the topic, ‘Clean and Green Environment.’ Earlier, in collaborated with Dimapur District Conservatory of Forest Office, NECU received saplings for plantation activities.
