Nagaland Excise urges for concerted effort to eradicate ‘drug menace’

June 26 is International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

Dimapur, June 25 (MExN): On the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, June 26, the Nagaland State Excise department has appealed to the people of the State and all organizations, NGOs working in the related field to put a concerted effort to “eradicate the dreaded drug menace from our midst.”  

A press release from Commissioner of Excise & Prohibition, Tarep Imchen further urged to affirm “not to harbour any drug traffickers/peddlers in any form directly or indirectly, but to report any incident of commission of offence under NDPS Act taking place or likely to place in your locality or neighborhood, immediately to the Excise department.”  

It also informed that illegal dealing in drugs, in any form – sale, possession, transaction, transportation, export, and import inside India or from outside – is prohibited and punishable under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985 with punishment ranging from 10 to 20 years imprisonment and with fine from Rs.1 lakh to Rs. 2 lakhs or with both.  

Allowing premises, warehouse, godown, vehicles, or use of any kind of conveyance will be liable for confiscation to the State under NDPS Act with punishment ranging from 10 to 20 years imprisonment and with fine from Rs.1. lakh to Rs. 2 Lakhs or with both, it added.   Further, the release stated that concealing of narcotic drugs in any form by goods, things or any items will be liable for confiscation to the State with punishment ranging from 10 to 20 years imprisonment and with fine from Rs.1 lakh to Rs. 2 lakhs or with both.  

NDPS Act 85 also prescribes stringent punishment to the extent of “death penalty” for repeated offences committed either in India or abroad, the Commissioner of Excise & Prohibition noted.  

The press release meanwhile said any property, assets (movable or immovable), bank accounts/bank balances acquired or derived from drug money by either spouse, family members/associates, friends are liable for attachment to the State and bank accounts/bank balances can be frozen under NDPS Act.  

The Nagaland State Excise department responsible for supply reduction of drugs, it added, is keeping strict vigil round the clock to check illegal trafficking of drugs in the State with all its available resources.
