Nagaland Power & Parliamentary Affairs Minister KG Kenye today said that the State currently faces a 90% shortfall in meeting its power requirements.
"The State produces only about 10% of its own requirements," he highlighted while addressing the North East Power Conclave in Guwahati, Assam on June 17.
“For all these years, we have had to shed a precious amount of finance for the payment of bills in the power sector, whereas this could have been utilised for much-needed developments in health and education,” he maintained.
The irony is that despite having so many natural resources, the State, for one reason or another, has not focused on generating or producing its own requirements, Kenye noted pointing to the untapped potential.
He further informed that the Government of India, under the Ministry of Power, is now encouraging significant development across all aspects of the power sector.
The North East Power Conclave is being organised by the Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers Association (IEEMA), the apex association of manufacturers of electrical, industrial electronics, and allied equipment in India.
Appreciating the association for expanding its activities in the North East, Kenye expressed hope that this would mark “the beginning of a long, faithful, committed, and dedicated partnership to develop the land and improve living conditions in the region.”
Founded in 1948, IEEMA is the first ISO-certified industry association encompassing the complete value chain in power generation, transmission, and distribution equipment, including new and renewable energy.
The Conclave, which will continue until June 18, will deliberate on opportunities in the North East, next-gen transmission for the region, upcoming projects and developments, and tech-driven transformation in the power sector.
