Nagaland: Following killing of conservation volunteer, TVBCLN petitions ADC

Zunheboto, February 16 (MExN): Following the alleged killing of a conservation volunteer from Kivikhu village by a poacher on February 14, a joint council of the Tizü Valley Biodiversity Conservation and Livelihood Network (TVBCLN) submitted a representation to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Satakha on Sunday.

According to a press release from the TVBCLN, a joint meeting was held where it was resolved that an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh would be paid to the family of the deceased.

It also resolved that a forest guard/forest beat should be established in the area for smooth functioning and implementation of Community Conservation Area (CCA) projects with the provision that a family member of the deceased will be appointed as forest guard.

Calling for the accused to be punished as per the law, it claimed that the Ghokhuvi Village Council “had failed to control its villagers despite repeated offences committed and warnings,” and resolved to impose a fine of Rs 50000 as penalty to the Council.

Further, the TVBCLN stated that all government funds should be stopped for villages violating the government’s ban on hunting.

The TVBCLN consist of Kivikhu, Ghukhuyi and Sukhai villages under Zunheboto district.
