Petrol price increased by Rs 3.60 and diesel by Rs 2.76 per litre in Nagaland as the fuel-tax hikes announcement by the State Government came into effect from midnight of November 11.

In Dimapur, petrol was retailing at Rs 83.94 per litre on Thursday, up from Rs 80.34 on Wednesday, reflecting an increase of Rs 3.60 due to the tax hike.

Likewise, diesel was selling at Rs 74.15 per litre on Thursday, up from Rs 71.3 on Wednesday, denoting an increase of Rs 2.76 as a result of the enhancement of tax rate, according to IndianOil ONE, the official app of the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd on ‘fuel related needs.’

Apart from the State’s own tax hike, the oil marketing companies in India have not revised retail price of petrol and diesel for over a month.

The State Government’s announcement on November 11 created confusion prompting many to rush to their nearest fuelling stations before the new rates came into effect from midnight of November 11.

While the tax rate on diesel was hiked marginally from 14.5% to 17.50% (or by 3%) and 25% to 29.80% (or by 4.80%) for petrol and other motor spirit, the ambiguous wording of the notification had confused many.

For instance, the notification said that the tax on diesel was an amended rate from 14.5% to“17.50 % or Rs 11.08 per litre, whichever is higher,” while tax rate on petrol and other motor spirit increased from  25% to “29.80% or Rs 18.26 per litre, whichever is higher.”

It prompted many to interpret the same as hikes by at least Rs 11.08 and Rs 18.26 per litre respectively for diesel and petrol. It failed to mention that the rates or absolute numbers were inclusive of existing rates.

On September 23, following the growing demands from various sections, the Nagaland Government decided to revoke a COVID-19 cess on petroleum products imposed since the last week of April.
