Kohima | November 22 :  Out of two state SIRDs (State Institute of Rural Development) in the national level selected by the Director General of National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Hyderabad for establishing a Rural Technology Park, Nagaland SIRD is the only other state apart from Kerala to be selected for this ambitious project in the entire country.
SIRD Director Limasenla Jamir said the project is now under process with the Ministry and hoped that it will be released soon.
The SIRD Nagaland also has the added distinction of having been made member of the National Committee for Research & Training under the chairmanship of Director General NIRD, Hyderabad and is among a selected few in the country to do so.
SIRD Nagaland was established in 1990 with the assistance of the European Economic Community (EEC) and the Government of India. Having 42 regular officers and staff along with 41 contingency staffs, it has grown in terms of its activities and infrastructure and now considered to be one of the well performing SIRDs in the north east, Jamir said.
The director said the department has 2 Extension Training Centres at Tuensang and Phek; conference hall with 100 seat capacity; 2 lecture halls; computer laboratory; guest house cum hostel and staff quarter building with 4 flats.
To fulfill and achieve its vision of an institute with state-of-the art infrastructure, SIRD had proposed the construction of auditorium to the Ministry of Rural Development. Consequently, the Ministry has granted a onetime grant of Rs. 1, 97,04,000. However due to the escalation of prices in the course of the release of funds the estimated cost had inflated to Rs. 2, 32,46,600 leaving shortfall of Rs. 1,50,00,000 which was covered under the state plan fund.
She expressed gratitude to Chief minister Neiphiu Rio for having taken a personal interest in this project and for having graciously released the remaining amount of Rs. 1,50,00, 000 under state plan fund, making possible to complete the structure of auditorium in time. Mentionably, the auditorium was inaugurated by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today.
She said the final total expenditure includes not only expenditure for the building itself but also the furnishings and other related works such as retaining wall, protection wall and so on. She congratulated the architects Wachusie Katiry and Tarachu Fithu for the design and contractor Pfuduolhou Kense for a commendable job within a comparatively limited budget.
She said that SIRD Nagaland has also incorporated a mini-rural museum in order to showcase the rich and diverse culture of Naga society, encompassing traditional technologies, trades and innovations from the past to the present.
Stating that collection of these artifacts will be an ongoing process, the director requested all the esteemed guest to wherever possible contribute items of interest which depict “our traditional culture and also their adaptation to the changing times.”
“This would be for posterity for our future generations and act as a tool to not only educate and enlighten our visitors but also create awareness amongst our own people about the rich cultural diversity what we are slowly losing touch with,” she said.
